The Day I Found Manuka Honey

I came across Manuka honey by complete accident. I was suffering from a horrendous sore throat for days. I tried everything but nothing helped so I went to my local health food store to get some organic honey as I heard this was good for throat problems in general. I came to the shelf where the organic honey was located and it was out of stock. Of all days to be out of stock I thought. I looked below the shelf and seen Manuka honey. There were many brands to choose from and had the letters MGO and UMF  followed by numbers written on them e.g  MGO 250+, UMF 10+. I went for a  jar that had MGO 250+ written on it.

I took 2 teaspoons of this honey in a cup of warm water one in the morning and one in the evening for about a week. It was by the 2nd day I started to notice that my throat no longer felt rare red. This sparked my interest and I began to look into Manuka honey more.

Manuka Honey

It turns out that Manuka honey has anti bacterial qualities that makes it different than other honeys out there. This is due to the higher amounts of hydrogen peroxide and methylglyoxal. It is used in wound dressings, to treat ulcers and to treat a range of infections such as MRSA in hospitals. It is also good for aiding with skin conditions such as eczema, due to it being so moisturising on the skin and burns as the skin regenerates faster and without scarring. Another fact is that Manuka honey is made in New Zealand from bees that collect the nectar from the Manuka bush (Leptospermum Scoparium).

The MGO and UMF are ratings that show how low or high the anti bacterial strength is in the Manuka honey. This is the guarantee that the Manuka honey is of the purest state.

The MGO rating means the methylglyoxal levels in the honey and is only used by the brand named Manuka Health New Zealand.

The UMF rating is the ‘Unique Manuka Factor’ which is used to indicate and measure the activity of the antibacterial  properties in the Manuka.

However, not all brands of Manuka honey have these ratings and therefore they do not contain the beneficial properties and cannot be compared. Although all types of honey have some anti bacterial properties, Manuka honey is stronger as the hydrogen peroxide it possesses can withstand both heat and light conditions.

Now when I feel a sore throat going on, I run to my jar of Manuka honey.

Everyone around me seems to be getting sick, and sadly, think I’ve caught it which was my worse nightmare 😦 I will definitely have to look out for this though! But in general, I love honey in hot water 🙂 even better with some fresh lemon.
